Bansko Town CentreMehana in Bansko Ski Resort

Bansko Town

Different from the average purpose built ski resort Bansko is a working Bulgarian mountain town, that in 2005 a ski resort was built above. UNESCO protection covers the mediaeval town centre as well as the huge National Park surrounding the ski area.

In Bansko, despite the new ski resort and surrounding infrastructure, traditional life continues as usual for the older residents. It is not unusual to see a herder escorting goats and cows past the chalet to the mountain pastures, underneath the gondola lift. There are several museums in Bansko, explaining the old agriculture and ways of life.

A walk into Bansko old town is fascinating, less than 10 minutes walk from our Bulgarian ski chalets, the cobbled streets meander around well hidden "mehanas" (spelt MEXAHA), rustic and cosy taverns into which the locals will welcome you with open arms to try the local delicacies.

For shopping, a walk down Pirin Street, the main street that runs from the Bansko Gondola to the old town takes you past a variety of shops selling everything you could need for your holiday often at very reasonable prices. The pottery and antique shops offer a great selection of souvenirs if you can't be tempted to take a bottle of the national fire-water (Rakia) home.
